I Know You're In There
I Know You're In There

OK, now this one goes WAY back - 1985. You have to remember, this is pre-digital.  It's just recorded on 4 track cassette recorder - a Fender Rhodes piano, a little Sequential Circuits Synth and a Roland TR-707 drum machine.  It's cave man stuff compared to what we have today.  But I did have a little help from my friends.  I brought the recorder over to Nick Jameson's studio and he laid down the guitar track with all his gear.  Thanks, mate!  I was also lucky enough to convince Pat Buchanan - a wonderful vocalist and guitar player who was doing a lot of jingle singing in Atlanta back in the day - to sing on the track.  He later went off to tour with Hall & Oates.  I wished I had known what the heck I was doing, because the recording is pretty terrible and the transfer from several generations of tape haven't helped it any.  But here it is anyway.  The song conveyed something about my emotional constipation at the time.

Another one from the vault, circa 1986.  Chippin' Away was co-written with Haynes Brooke.  We had a brief but incredibly fun and creative time writing country songs together back in Atlanta.  Again the recording is, well - what can I say?  You can hear the tape damage clicking away as well - I didn't have a real vault to protect the acetate and I guess I was lucky to get these transferred to digital when I did.

Nick Jameson had broken his ankle really badly and was laid up in bed for months.  I brought the 4 track over to his house and he recorded the guitar track with his vintage Telecaster lying in bed.  That's me on the trumpet, doing my best Nashville Brass imitation.  It's kind of a kooky song, but I like the chorus.
